Can 2014 be the year of being grown ups? Please.

2013 wasn’t a bad year for me, it had its shitty moments, but all in all it was ok. Not so much for a lot of people. All in all it was a pretty awful year for genre fiction. We lost a lot of good writers and well loved people in 2013.  We can’t change that. There are some things about last year we can change in 2014 if we’ve a will to though.

Last year saw an incredible amount of sniping and bitching and pissing in the wind for, as far as I can see, no good reason. Let’s change that.

Let’s make 2014 a year where we see writers as writers instead of trad, indie or self pub writers. Let’s stop sneering at people who do things a different way from you. Same goes for other roles in publishing and maybe we can appreciate the bloggers a bit, they work their asses off for basically nothing.

2014 could be the year of all geeks being just geeks. Can we please get over ourselves and stop categorising geeks as real or fake or not geeky enough. We don’t need gatekeepers to our enthusiasm. We all enjoy things in different ways, deal with it.

When we see creeping or inappropriate and intimidating behaviour why don’t we try standing up and saying ‘this is not an acceptable way to interact with me’ and let’s also try supporting the people who do that. Instead of disregarding or deriding them. It may mean some uncomfortable moments for people, but I think that’s worth it to reclaim our conventions as safe spaces, to drive the message home that this predatory and unpleasant behaviour will not be tolerated and cannot be conducted there.  So if you are uncomfortable with people taking control of their personal space, it you aren’t ok with a bit of a scene rather than silently tolerating harassment, well, fuck you frankly.

We could, and I know this is a bit out there, try behaving like thoughtful human beings on the internet. You know not behave like asshats just because we are talking to a screen. If you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, in a room with them, why on earth would you say it online?

Let’s make this a good year for genre. We are supposed to be a community, let’s fucking well behave like it this year. I realise that not picking holes in everything and taking offense at imagined slights will leave some of you with nothing to say. You have some options, you could just be quiet and observe what’s going on around you for a while, or you can see if you can find something positive to take pleasure in, you never know, you might like it. Failing all else, just stay the fuck out of my space. ok?

Edit: Note, as pointed out by a good friend, more cake! Sharing home made baked goods with friends is a time honoured tradition between nice grown up people.
